Step 1

First you need to know where to send your work. To find publishers and their submission guidelines, search the "The Writer’s Market 2009". This guide is renewed every year for both amateur and professional freelance writers. You can find copies under the "resources" section of this page.
2.
Step 2

Once you have this essential guide – currently "The Writer’s Market 2009" – browse magazine publishers. Look for ones that claim to publish first-time authors. Remember that big-name magazines (e.g., Harper’s Bazaar, Seventeen, The New York Times) usually want big-time writers only.
3.
Step 3

Decide who you want to write for, then research the magazine. Follow submission guidelines precisely. You can search for specific directions on the magazine’s website. Read the magazine before sending in any of your own work, to make sure the style of your piece matches that of the publisher.
4.
Step 4

Pay heed to word count requests, or your manuscripts will be quickly rejected. You also need to choose the right publisher. If the magazine has never printed poetry, submit your haikus elsewhere. Your final draft should be formatted to perfection. Make sure your spelling and grammar are immaculate.
5.
Step 5

Don’t write and then find a publisher for your masterpiece. Figure out what the magazines need first, and tailor your work to them. Forget about being fancy and pretentious with your words. Just write and enjoy it. Directions for manuscript formatting will be inside of your "Writer’s Market" guide book.
