What is the purpose of expanding an NCAA Conference?

The PAC 10 is looking to expand to a mega conference. Why? What are the benefits/consequences of a team changing conferences?

mainly because they are losing about $15 million dollars because they do not have a championship game like the Big 12 SEC ACC confrences

  1. Huge potential increase in TV revenue is the largest single reason to expand a conference. With more schools as members, the conference commands higher TV ratings for its games and therefore a significant premium from advertisers. The conference earns this revenue from TV networks and then shares it with its member schools. The Big Ten is by far the most-lucrative conference in this regard; each member institution earns over $20 million in shared revenue from the conference each year. Another reason cited is to give smaller sports teams more opportunity to schedule opponents on a permanent basis and develop natural rivalries. There are secondary reasons as well, such as a shared commitment to academic excellence.
