what is the differnence between meetings, conferences, seminars, workshops, focus groups?
Meetings are typically internal among employees in order to share knowledge of what’s happening within the company and get others up to date on various projects.
Conferences are often industry wide, where many companies from various industries with a common relation meet. Companies that are up and down the supply chain from each other benefit from conferences because they can build new business relations to increase their productivity/decrease costs/etc.
Seminars are like meetings, but often have a more directed purpose. They might be designed to teach or educate. Think more educational than informing.
Workshops could be taken as the same thing as seminars.
Focus groups are typically done in marketing, where consumers (or potential consumers) are gathered together to discuss their thoughts about a company’s product or service. Focus groups are a popular way companies receive feedback from the market.

Interesting question. Meetings can be very informal as well as formal. Conferences are usually business orientated and lack a causal atmosphere (althought that is hardly the case in some instances). Seminars usually imply a learning mode, usually mastery of some function, etc, related to one’s business, company or that which an employee must learn for the good of the ? business. Workshops (and I do NOT mean to sound class bias) are usually for blue collar workers who must update their skills, again, for the good of the co. they work for. Focus Groups are more intense and usually realate to interpersonal realtions, more subtle forms of communication challenges which must be tackled. But for all of this? I have heard these terms interchanged so much, I don’t know if there an official answer, answer, answer.
