What is the definition of a "brown bag" meeting in an office context?

Someone in my office is moderating a "brown bag" for the employees to recap a conference that was held last month. I’ve never heard of this term to refer to a meeting before. What does it mean? What is the history of using this term?

a "brown bag" meeting refers to a meeting that occurs during lunch, but lunch will not be provided by the company (meaning its ok to bring food/drinks into the meeting). Brown paper bags are what kids used to take their lunches to school in, i’m guessing the roots of the term come from there.

  1. It just means the meeting takes place over the lunch hour (or what most people would consider the lunch hour), but food is not provided. Everyone must either eat before or after the meeting or bring a bag lunch. Or just be hungry.

It is a meeting over an informal lunch. You are probably supposed to pack a lunch.

  4. It means bring your lunch. The meeting is going through lunch time. Expect to eat your lunch there.
