What are the reasons behind the catcher and pitcher meeting during the at bat?
is the purpose of the meeting solely to discuss the pitch sequence or are they also trying to break the batters concentration. i’ve been quite annoyed w/ these conferences during the playoffs. i think a conference showed only be allowed before the at-bat and not during especially late in the count.
They are trying to both. If the pitcher waves off a lot of the pitches the catcher signals the catcher will make a trip up there just to try and get on the same page. Also it can make a batter cool off. Some times the catcher will go up to the mound to give more time for the pitcher in the bull pen to warm up that way the pitcher on the mound won’t have to pitch to the guy who is on deck. Then sometimes these meetings are not anything at all. They will go up there just to make it look like they are planning something when in fact they are talking about what to eat after the game.
Both, but also to discuss placement of defensive players and who is going to do what if this or that happens. I agree it is annoying, but much less annoying than the last 3minutes of a basketball game that seems to last 20 minutes.

In addition to the certainty of the communication between the two, if there is a runner on second, they sometimes change up the signs so that the runner can’t communicate to the batter of the possible pitch. Look at it this way, if it means the difference between your team winning and losing a game, it’s better to suffer a slight bit of annoyance on the fans part than to have the batter hammer in a 2 run double.
